Benue Catholic school forced to close following assault by armed individuals

An order has been given by the Catholic Archdiocese of Makurdi, Benue State, for the immediate shutdown of Father Angus Frazer Memorial High School in Adeke, Makurdi, after it was targeted by unidentified gunmen.

During the late hours of Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the school was attacked by unknown assailants, but they were successfully fended off by personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported, although one security member sustained a minor injury and is currently undergoing medical treatment at a undisclosed medical facility.

A press release issued on May 8, 2024, by the Director of Social Communications of the Diocese, Very Revd. Fr. Moses Iorapuu, instructed the immediate cessation of all operations at the school until further notice.

As stated in the communication: “Following the assault on Father Angus Frazer Memorial High School by unknown individuals, the Diocese of Makurdi has taken the precautionary step to halt all activities at the school in order to safeguard the students’ lives.

“This decision was made as a proactive measure to ensure the well-being of our children and prevent a potential catastrophe, thanks to the swift intervention of the school administration and security personnel who thwarted the attack.”

“The Director of Catholic Education Service of the Diocese has also been tasked with engaging with relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, the Diocese has instructed priests and individuals in pastoral roles to enhance security around their premises and has made an appeal to the necessary authorities to guarantee the safety and security of all citizens.”

Father Angus Frazer Memorial High School is situated in the Welfare Quarters at Utuur Layout, Phase 3 region of Makurdi, an area that has sadly gained notoriety for recurrent incidents of attacks, violence, and abductions linked to suspected Fulani herdsmen.
