Benin City Hosts National Trials

The AFN National Trials have kicked off in Benin City, the Edo State capital, bringing a vibrant atmosphere to the city as athletes gather at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The event, running from today, Sunday, to Tuesday, 18, 2024, aims to select athletes to represent Nigeria at the upcoming African Senior Championships in Douala, Cameroon, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A lineup of prominent Nigerian track and field stars, including world record holder Oluwatobiloba Amusan, Favour Ofili, Chidi Okezie, and Udodi Onwuzurike, among others, are set to compete. Furthermore, NCAA collegiate athletes like Omolara Ogunmakinju and Godson Oghenebrume will also be showcasing their talents.

The AFN has mandated all athletes to participate, emphasizing that performances at the trials will play a significant role in determining the Nigerian representatives at the Paris Olympics. President Tonobok Okowa commended the athletes for their dedication and expressed gratitude for their commitment to securing Olympic qualifications.

Athletes and spectators can look forward to an exciting three-day event in Benin City, with the executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Yusuf Alli, extending a warm welcome to all participants. He highlighted the tradition of the Nigerian Trials as a festive occasion and assured that Edo State aims to recreate that festive atmosphere.
