Benefits of Smart Waste Bins According to LAWMA

Residents are encouraged by Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to acquire smart bins for domestic waste storage, aiming to promote a clean and sustainable environment.

At a demonstration of the evacuation of smart bins by waste evacuation trucks at LAWMA’s headquarters in Ijora Olopa, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the importance of incorporating smart bins into the state’s waste management system as a significant advancement that would streamline waste collection processes by Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted the enhanced functionality of the smart bins, which include features like a Radio Frequency Identification chain that enables monitoring of the bin’s emptiness by PSP operators.

With geolocation specific to each residence, the smart bins are permanently linked to the houses they are delivered to, allowing easy tracking and remote monitoring in case of theft.

The durability, tracking capability, and color-coded separation for waste and recycling make the smart bins stand out from traditional waste bins, as noted by Dr. Gbadegesin.

Residents who opt for these smart bins are encouraged to participate in the state’s new waste management system, with incentives offered for recycling activities.

Dr. Gbadegesin urged all Lagos residents to embrace these innovative waste management solutions, emphasizing the importance of staying updated with technological advancements in keeping the city clean.

To improve waste management practices in Lagos, residents are urged to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and make use of the services provided by assigned PSP operators.
