Amid violent protests demanding her removal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has resigned and escaped the country, leading to the dissolution of the parliament.

A statement from the president’s office on Tuesday confirmed this development.

Following a deadline set by protesting student leaders threatening strict action if their demands were not met, the announcement came swiftly.

NewsNow reported that after weeks of violent student protests claiming over 300 lives, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday.

In the aftermath of Hasina’s resignation, a wave of attacks and looting targeted numerous Awami League offices and leaders’ residences in Dhaka and other regions.

Meanwhile, at a news briefing on Monday, Army Chief Gen. Waker-Uz-Zaman, following a meeting with leaders from various political parties except Hasina’s Awami League, urged the protesting students to exercise patience and avoid further violence. He pledged justice for the victims and called upon the public to maintain confidence in the military.
