Baghdad’s Green Zone Hit by Two Rockets Targeting US Embassy

Reports have surfaced indicating that the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, which houses foreign embassies including the US mission, was targeted by rockets, just 24 hours after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at Iraqi bases hosting American and coalition forces in response to the killing of Qasem Soleimani, its top general.

According to Reuters, Iraq’s military confirmed that two Katyusha rockets landed inside the Green Zone, where the U.S. Embassy, as well as embassies of Western nations and foreign businesses, are situated.

AFP’s correspondents in Baghdad also reported hearing two loud blasts, which were followed by the sounding of security sirens within the Green Zone.

Following the rocket attacks, the White House and Pentagon did not immediately issue any comments. This came after President Donald Trump’s statement indicating that Iran seemed to be de-escalating tensions with the United States.
