Atiku urges Federal Government to address perpetrators of #IgboMustGo

Calling on the Federal Government, Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has emphasized the need for investigation and action against those accountable for the #IgboMustGo campaign on X.

Expressing his concerns on Thursday via his verified Facebook page, the former Vice President condemned the hashtag as a means of division and a threat to peace and security.

Highlighting the constitutional rights of all Nigerians to live and work freely across the nation, he stated, “The recent call on @X (formerly @twitter) for a protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, demanding the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states, is deeply troubling and fundamentally opposed to the principles of unity and coexistence that define our nation. Such rhetoric is not only divisive but also endangers our peace and security, as our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country.

Referencing historical precedents like Rwanda, Atiku stressed the importance of addressing hatred and bigotry to prevent dire consequences. He urged swift and decisive actions to counter divisive sentiments.

His statement continued, “I call on the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to take immediate and strong action against those inciting such hatred and division. It is imperative to investigate, arrest, and prosecute individuals promoting ethnic discrimination and violence. The rule of law must prevail, and those found guilty of incitement should face the full extent of legal consequences.

Emphasizing Nigeria’s strength in diversity, Atiku underscored the need to thwart any efforts to sow discord among the populace, particularly in multicultural hubs like Lagos and the Southwest. He praised the contributions of various ethnic groups, including the Igbo community, to the country’s progress.

Encouraging unity and understanding, Atiku appealed to Nigerians to collectively combat divisive rhetoric and foster a climate of tolerance and harmony.

He concluded, “Our future hinges on our ability to coexist harmoniously. The government and security agencies must swiftly safeguard this fundamental principle to ensure every Nigerian can live without the fear of discrimination or persecution.

“Given the silence in the five days following the emergence of this threat, it is alarming. Immediate actions to apprehend, investigate, and prosecute those behind this malicious agenda are imperative. This will serve as a deterrent to others contemplating similar paths that jeopardize national security.”
