Atiku Abubakar Condemns Use of Live Ammunition on #EndBadGovernance Protesters

Expressing his disapproval, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has criticized the reported use of live ammunition on #EndBadGovernance protesters.

The challenging economic situation in Nigeria has left many struggling to meet their basic needs.

In reaction, a group of young people initiated demonstrations starting on Thursday and extending through Friday and Saturday in various places such as Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Rivers, and others, demanding an end to hunger and poor governance in Nigeria.

Incidents on Saturday saw masked individuals allegedly shooting at protesters and journalists within the Mashood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

In an issued statement, Atiku described the event as intolerable and reminiscent of the repressive military rule era.

He stated, “The use of live ammunition on citizens peacefully demonstrating against bad governance, as witnessed today in Kano and Abuja, is strongly condemned by me. This act is completely unacceptable and brings memories of the dark days of military dictatorship.”

“It is vital to remind the government and security agencies of their primary responsibility to ensure a safe environment where citizens can peacefully protest without fear.

“When security forces resort to firing at innocent demonstrators, they only escalate tensions, turning peaceful protests into chaos. I do not believe that promoting violence is the intention of our authorities.

“I call upon the international community, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to closely observe the situation in Nigeria and hold its leadership and security forces accountable.”

The former Vice President urged President Tinubu to exhibit genuine leadership by promptly addressing the demands of the Nigerian populace.

He remarked, “I reiterate my advice to protesters to firmly exercise their right to peaceful protest and reject any form of violence.

“Those involved in looting and vandalizing public and private property must be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law. By engaging in such actions, they undermine the legitimate protests and play into the hands of those opposing their right to protest.”
