At least one dead and dozens injured in the derailment of a tram in Milan

One person died and dozens were injured this Friday in the Italian city of Milan when a tram derailed while passing through the center, crashing into a wall and running over several pedestrians.

The accident, according to local media, occurred around 4:00 p.m. and resulted in the death of one man and about 40 injuries of varying degrees. One of them is in critical condition, six are in serious condition and many others have minor injuries, according to the same sources.

The tram corresponds to the line that crosses the center of Milan from the central train station to Porta Génova.

The derailment occurred between Republic Square and Porta Venecia, near the center, and numerous emergency personnel, including police officers, firefighters and emergencies with an extensive operation in the area, quickly rushed to the scene.

According to a first reconstruction of the events, in addition to videos and images broadcast on networks, the tram with passengers on board derailed, invading the opposite road until it collided with a wall, running over several pedestrians in its path.

The general prosecutor of Milan, Marcello Viola, has appeared at the scene and in the next few hours will open an investigation for involuntary manslaughter and injuries due to negligence with the aim of clarifying what happened, the media add.
