“Five innocent were shot tonight. We lost four lives – two men and two women – in another act of violence with meaningless firearms, including an officer of the New York City Police Department,” Adams said in a press conference.
The injured person is in critical condition “fighting for his life,” he added.
The mayor has said that the shooter died “for an apparent self -inflicted bullet wound.”
The New York Police Commissioner, Jessica S. Tisch, has said that the incident began around 18:20 local time (22:20 GMT) when the attacker left a black vehicle that parked near an office building in the Midtown area, which entered with a long weapon in the arm.
