ASUU raises concerns over unresolved issues with FG after 8-month strike suspension

  • The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has stated that despite ending its 8-month strike, there are outstanding unresolved issues in its dispute with the Federal Government.
  • Professor Emmanuel Osodeke from ASUU commended the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

ASUU announced the suspension of its strike on Friday, October 14, 2022.

However, the union highlighted that the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Chris Ngige, had taken legal action against the striking lecturers.

In a statement signed by ASUU’s National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the union expressed its discontent with the lack of resolution on the issues with the government.

The statement outlined the series of events leading to the suspension of the strike, including the legal proceedings and the efforts made by various stakeholders to mediate the dispute.

While acknowledging the efforts of the House of Representatives’ leadership and other concerned individuals, ASUU emphasized that the lingering issues had not been satisfactorily addressed.

Despite the unresolved issues, ASUU decided to suspend the strike in response to appeals from President Muhammadu Buhari and in recognition of the intervention by Hon. Gbajabiamila and other well-meaning Nigerians.

ASUU directed all its members to resume their duties from 12:01 on Friday, October 14, 2022, in compliance with the decision to suspend the strike.
