Approach taken by Ogun State to combat cholera outbreak

The Ogun state government has directed that every household lacking toilet facilities must install one within the next three to six months or face penalties. This initiative aims to address the recent cholera outbreak spanning 30 states in the nation.

An order has been issued for all public and private schools, markets, parks, garages, petrol stations, and mechanic villages in the state to ensure availability of toilet facilities and running water to uphold proper hygiene and sanitation standards.

The announcement was made by Mr. Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, in a statement released to the press on Saturday.

The goal of these preventive measures is to avert a potential cholera outbreak within the state. Governor Abiodun is deeply concerned about safeguarding the residents, given Ogun’s proximity to Lagos and the high level of interaction between the two states.

The precautionary guidelines entail the following requirements: “Every residence must have functioning toilets. Any household lacking this facility should designate a room for conversion into a toilet.” The residents are granted a grace period of three to six months for compliance.

“All petrol stations must provide operational public toilets with running water as part of their corporate social responsibility.

“All garages, parks, and markets must have functional toilets with running water.

“Mechanic villages should have operational toilets with running water.

“All schools, both public and private, should feature public toilets with running water,” the statement specified.

In addition to these directives, residents are urged to embrace the following practices to fortify themselves against the disease.

The Ministry of Environment will oversee strict adherence to all these regulations, with violators subject to legal repercussions as warranted.
