Appeal from UniJos VC for NASS Assistance in Resolving Power Disconnection Issue

Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, has urged the House of Representatives Committee on University Education to step in regarding the disconnection of the university from the public electricity supply by the Jos Electricity Distribution Plc.

During an oversight visit to the university, Ishaya raised concerns about the school being without electricity for over a month due to increased electricity tariffs.

Prior to being categorized as Band A electricity users, the university’s monthly electricity bill ranged from N20 million to N25 million. However, after the classification, the bill skyrocketed to around N79 million to N80 million per month.

Expressing the urgency to have the university reclassified from Band A, Ishaya highlighted the financial strain on the university, citing challenges in settling the monthly bill of approximately N25 million, which worsened post-classification.

Leading the committee on the oversight visit, Fulata assured that the lawmakers are committed to enhancing the quality of education. He mentioned that they are reviewing past allocations from the Federal Government and internally generated revenue to ensure compliance with the Appropriation Act.
