Another Ukraine Village Falls to Russian Forces

In their ongoing offensive in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, Russian forces have announced the capture of another village.

The defense ministry reported that Russia had “liberated” the village of Pivdenne, situated on the outskirts of Toretsk, a larger town that Russian forces have been advancing towards over recent months.

Before the full-scale military offensive launched by Russia in 2022, Pivdenne had an estimated population of around 1,400, according to Ukrainian government data.

Moscow has claimed to have taken control of several villages in the Donetsk region in recent weeks, many of which are small in size.

Russia declared the annexation of the Donetsk region—along with three other regions in eastern and southern Ukraine—in 2022, although control is not fully established.

Russian forces are closing in on Toretsk, a town that used to be home to approximately 30,000 residents, during their latest offensive.

Pivdenne, previously known as Leninske as referred to by Russia, is located approximately six kilometers (four miles) southeast of Toretsk.
