Allegations of Panic and Defeat Looming over Edo Governorship Race

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have raised concerns about the recent actions of Governor Godwin Obaseki and other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, indicating a sense of panic within their camp ahead of the upcoming governorship election.

In a statement, these leaders accused Governor Obaseki, the PDP, and its candidate Asue Ighodalo of orchestrating a smear campaign against the APC’s governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

The APC Vanguard members claimed that the sudden desperation exhibited by the PDP, Obaseki, and Ighodalo stems from their anticipation of a significant defeat in the upcoming polls.

A group of Civil Society Organizations recently held a press conference and lodged complaints with various authorities, alleging that Okpebholo had distributed cash at a public event.

The national coordinator of the Vanguard, David Osarobo, expressed bewilderment at the tactics employed by Obaseki and Ighodalo to discredit Okpebholo for political gain, despite the latter’s rising popularity as the APC candidate.

Osarobo stated, “Governor Obaseki, the troubled PDP, and their inexperienced candidate, Ighodalo, are resorting to baseless accusations as they fear the impending defeat. Their attempts to tarnish Okpebholo’s image are futile as the people of Edo have already made their decision.”

“The APC, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been instrumental in various developmental projects in Edo State, showcasing a commitment to the welfare of its citizens,” he added.

“It is crucial for the residents of Edo to align themselves with the APC and support Okpebholo as the next governor, in order to break free from the grasp of self-serving individuals and promote a locally-driven solution to the challenges faced under Obaseki’s administration,” Osarobo emphasized.
