Air Strikes by NAF Have Devastated Terrorist Cells in Niger State

In Niger State, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has dealt a significant blow to terrorist factions through airstrikes carried out in Allawa village, Shiroro Local Government Area.

Edward Gabkwet, the NAF spokesperson, reported that the airstrikes were executed by the air component of Operation Whirl Punch on May 3.

The operation was focused on terrorists who had recently targeted a primary school in Allawa and launched an attack on Galapai village on May 1.

Elaborating on the situation, Gabkwet mentioned, “On the same day, 3 May 2024, the air component of Operation Whirl Punch conducted preemptive airstrikes on terrorists concealing themselves in Allawa village, near Shiroro in Niger State.”

He clarified that the mission was driven by reliable intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists in the area post the evacuation of locals for their safety.

In the statement issued, it was outlined, “These terrorists had invaded the deserted Allawa community in Shiroro LGA on 1 May 2024 and set fire to the Central Primary School.

“Later that day, another group of terrorists armed with AK-47/49 rifles arrived in the vicinity following their incursion into Galapai village in Galadima Kogo district of the same LGA.”

“To prevent further occupation and eliminate the terrorists in the area, the air component scrambled its platforms to strike the location.

“Upon reaching the site, multiple terrorists were identified and effectively engaged.”

Gabkwet detailed that the troops also carried out a raid on Allawa forest, where they destroyed a cache of arms concealed by the terrorists.

Additionally, in a separate operation, an airstrike was conducted in Chinene within the Mandara mountains along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

This operation led to the neutralization of several terrorists and the obliteration of their weaponry and supply lines.

Gabkwet further pointed out, “In the same area, 7-gun trucks were spotted parked beneath trees.

“Consequently, air interdiction was authorized and executed on the assembly area and tree coverage to eliminate the terrorists and dismantle their weaponry and means of transport.

“After the strike, assessment footage indicated successful hits as many terrorists were neutralized, and their logistics were destroyed.”
