Agreement with Striking FCT School Teachers Revealed by Governor Wike

In Abuja, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, disclosed the agreement he reached with the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Abuja chapter, regarding the current strike by primary school teachers in the nation’s capital.

During a meeting with the FCT graded chiefs and Area Council Chairmen on Wednesday, Wike revealed the details of the agreement.

The Chairman of the FCT Traditional Council and the Onah of Abaji, Dr. Adamu Baba Yunusa, drew the Minister’s attention to the situation in the FCT.

Yunusa also highlighted the issue of the striking staff of the FCT Area Councils, NULGE, which prompted Wike to announce that the issues have been resolved.

According to the Minister, he held meetings with the NUT and the Area Councils, and they reached an agreement that the FCTA would offset 40 percent of the debts owed by the Area Councils, to be paid on a monthly basis. Meanwhile, the Area Councils would be responsible for paying the remaining 60 percent.

He stated, “The same thing with NULGE. FCTA has taken over 40 percent, let them pay 60 percent. In the next three, four months, we would have finished paying; they were all happy.”
