After 20 Years, Gbajabiamila Officially Steps Down from House of Reps

The immediate past Speaker of the House of Reps, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Wednesday tendered his resignation from the Green Chamber after 20 years.

Gbajabiamila will now focus on being Chief of Staff (CoS) to President Bola Tinubu.

His appointment letter as Tinubu’s CoS was dated 14 June.

Gbajabiamila’s resignation was convened in a letter read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Wednesday during plenary.

He was first elected in 2003 and he remained in the parliament for 20 years until his resignation today, Wednesday.

Prior to his appointment, Gbajabiamila of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on February 25, won the Surulere I Federal Constituency election for the sixth time.

However, his recent appointment had raised concerns as to how he would manage both roles owing to the fact that the former Speaker was on Tuesday inaugurated alongside his colleagues for the 10th Assembly.

The lawmaker’s resignation means that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, may conduct a fresh election to fill the role.
