Experts urge action as adolescents face alarming rates of HIV and infectious diseases

Raising concerns about the difficulties encountered by adolescents, the Centre for Integrated Health Programs (CIHP) emphasized that a substantial number of them are grappling with high levels of HIV and various infectious diseases, as well as challenges related to mental health, substance abuse, and restricted access to reproductive health services.

In a press release issued by Dr. Bolanle Oyeledun, the Chief Executive of CIHP, the group underscored the necessity for experts to convene and deliberate on the vulnerabilities faced by this critical segment of society to devise effective solutions, particularly concerning their healthcare needs.

Dr. Oyeledun emphasized that this crucial demographic in the country seems to have been neglected and emphasized the need for sustainable strategies to empower them.

Stating, “Adolescence is a crucial phase of life marked by substantial physical, emotional, and social transformations. In Nigeria, adolescents and young individuals encounter a plethora of hurdles, including elevated rates of HIV and other infectious diseases, mental health concerns, substance misuse, and inadequate access to reproductive health services.”

The roundtable discussion will concentrate on pinpointing sustainable methodologies to empower adolescents through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, vocational training, and leadership initiatives. Participants will also deliberate on the impact of technology in bolstering health interventions and promoting mental well-being among the youth.
