Nigerian model Adetutu O.J, known for her prominent tribal marks and her aspiration to model for Rihanna, has taken to task Instagram comedian Broda Shaggi for mocking a woman with tribal marks in a makeup video he shared on Instagram.
In the video, Broda Shaggi can be seen commenting as a woman with prominent tribal marks undergoes makeup to conceal them.
“God will punish the people that invented makeup,” Broda Shaggi said as the model was transformed with makeup to the point that her tribal marks were no longer visible.
Adetutu O.J., who has been vocal about the discrimination she has faced due to her facial marks, found Broda Shaggi’s commentary disrespectful and accused him of ridiculing people with tribal marks.
In support of Adetutu, her followers also criticized the Instagram comedian, alleging that he was contributing to the discrimination faced by people with tribal marks.
Adetutu expressed her dismay in a written statement:
“Do you find this funny? I know you were a friend of my brother, Makinde, while at Unilag, but I’m disappointed in you for making such a joke. Individuals with tribal marks are often subjected to mockery, whether they like it or not. If a makeup artist conceals her tribal marks, it’s because she chose to or it was part of the agreement with the artist. That girl deserves an apology, and this video angers me because it’s not amusing. People with tribal marks deserve respect, not ridicule. Even if she consented to having her marks concealed by her makeup artist, your joke undermines both the artist and the woman with tribal marks. She may not speak up for herself, but I have spoken my mind. The video is simply mockery and it’s not humorous.”
