Addressing Educational Disparities for Girls Led to Establishment of an Alternative High School – Oluremi Tinubu

During the launch of the Alternative High Schools for Girls in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu emphasized her commitment to supporting girls’ education in response to the significant gaps that exist in Nigeria.

She introduced the concept of establishing an alternative high school for girls back in 2007, which was embraced by the Lagos State Ministry of Education during her husband’s tenure as the governor of Lagos State. This initiative continues to operate successfully to this day.

As an educator and advocate for lifelong learning, Tinubu’s inspiration stems from a desire to provide a second chance at education for young girls and women who had to abandon schooling due to various reasons such as unplanned pregnancies, cultural constraints, and financial limitations. She envisions equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to realize their full potential in life.

Highlighting the obstacles preventing girls from accessing education, Tinubu expressed her concern about the repercussions of limited educational opportunities on girls’ ability to support themselves and make informed decisions regarding their health and future.

Observing the alarming rate of school dropouts, the First Lady emphasized the necessity for innovative educational solutions to address this issue effectively.

The selection of Osun State as the site for the school was conducted through a transparent process involving a random selection method during a strategic meeting with state first ladies, ensuring fairness and impartiality.

In his remarks, Governor Ademola Adeleke pledged the state government’s support to ensure the successful operation of the school upon its completion, underscoring their commitment to promoting girls’ education.

Adeleke outlined various government initiatives focused on enhancing families’ capability to meet basic needs and prioritizing workers’ welfare as a key aspect of their agenda. Additionally, the government is resolute in combating sexual violence against women, implementing measures in line with the directives of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

During his address, Dr. Ahmed Bobboi, the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education, commended the efforts of the Adeleke administration in advancing universal basic education in the state, expressing confidence in the school’s ability to achieve and surpass its educational objectives.
