Adamawa committee releases 119 inmates to decongest prisons

The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee has released 119 inmates from a correctional center in Yola, Adamawa State, as part of its effort to decongest prisons in the state. The committee, headed by the state Chief Judge, Justice Nathan Musa, concluded the process of discharging the inmates on January 25th.

In addition to the released inmates, the committee convicted 49 awaiting trial inmates and granted bail to 31 others who were in prison detention. Justice Nathan Musa emphasized the committee’s commitment to fast-tracking court proceedings and reforming the judiciary system in the state, adding that the aim was to address the serious gap between those awaiting trials and those already convicted.

Following the 2-day exercise, during which the committee attended to 410 cases, Justice Nathan Musa addressed the inmates and explained the committee’s approach to the process. He highlighted the committee’s responsibility to periodically visit prisons to decongest especially those awaiting trial, as mandated by the Minister of Internal Affairs.
