ActionAid Nigeria urges Tinubu to address protesters’ demand

ActionAid Nigeria’s Call to Tinubu Regarding Protesters’ Demands

President Bola Tinubu is urged by ActionAid Nigeria to promptly address the nation and present a comprehensive plan to tackle bad governance and implement policies that benefit the underprivileged, as stated in a press release by the organization’s Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, on Friday.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Mamedu remarked, “The requests for pro-poor policies not only hold merit but are imperative. Rising inflation is severely impacting livelihoods, while the current government spending priorities fail to align with the harsh realities confronting millions of Nigerians.”

The organization criticized recent court rulings that confined protests to designated areas, warning that such decisions “establish a troubling precedent that could suppress citizens’ freedom of expression.”

ActionAid Nigeria voiced apprehension over the use of tear gas on peaceful protesters and the infiltration of demonstrations by troublemakers, leading to looting and vandalism.

They urged both pro and anti-protest participants to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of their demonstrations. The statement continued, “We also insist that the President promptly deliver a direct address to the populace, outlining concrete steps to address the prevailing issues.”

The organization highlighted that the protesters’ demands revolve around transparency, accountability, and policies that place the welfare of the populace at the forefront.

Stressing the need for immediate action, the organization conveyed, “The trajectory of Nigeria hinges on responsive, accountable, and citizen-focused governance. The requests of the #EndBadGovernance protesters are a resonating plea for change that cannot be disregarded.”
