Abia State Local Government Elections in Progress as Assembly Confirms ABSIEC Members

In a recent development, the Abia State House of Assembly has completed the screening and confirmation of the chairman and several member nominees of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) as presented by Governor Alex Otti.

The Deputy Speaker, Mr. Augustine Okezie, who presided over the day’s plenary session, made the announcement on the floor of the House.

Professor George Chima has been officially confirmed as the Chairman-designate, while Dr. Kelechi Okere, Joseph Uzoma Akara, Nkemdirim Kalu, and Bertha Ehumadu have been approved as members of the Abia State electoral body.

Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker mentioned that the remaining two nominees, Ekele Queen Ahuchogu and Onyemauche Elekwe, who were absent during the screening, will have their vetting done on another scheduled day when they appear before the House.

Additionally, the House also vetted and endorsed Governor Otti’s nominee, Mrs. Eke Ngozi Ogbonnaya-Ugwo, for the position of Auditor General of the state.

During the plenary session, the House passed into law H.A.B.21: The Abia State 2024 Appropriation Virement Bill, 2024.

This bill seeks to reallocate the sum of One Hundred and Seventy-One Billion, Seventy-Four Million, Six Hundred and Sixty-Four Thousand, Nine Hundred and Sixty-Five Naira (N171,074,664,965.00) as stated in the 2024 Abia State Budget Appropriation Law to cater to the government’s services in Abia State for the fiscal year ending on 31st December 2024, along with other relevant purposes.
