Abacha’s family loses bid to access bank accounts in Switzerland, UK and others

The attempt made by Abacha’s family to access bank accounts in Switzerland, UK, and other countries has been dismissed by the Supreme Court. The family’s access to these accounts was blocked by the Nigerian government in 1999. The Supreme court upheld the decisions of the lower courts and ruled that it was too late for the Abacha family to contest the government’s decision. The accounts were frozen following mutual judicial assistance agreements entered with the countries by the Nigerian government during the administration of former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999.
