Excitement Builds as Iwobi and Ndidi Gear Up for 2025 AFCON Qualifiers

The upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda have sparked enthusiasm in Super Eagles midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. As the national team prepares for redemption in the upcoming international window, reports PUNCH Sports Extra.

Nigeria’s schedule includes a match against Benin Republic on Saturday, September 7 in Uyo, followed by a clash with Rwanda three days later.

Interestingly, both opponents are part of Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying group. Benin Republic, led by former Nigeria coach Genort Rohr, managed to defeat the Super Eagles in their previous encounter in Abidjan back in June.

In anticipation of the upcoming fixtures, Ndidi and Iwobi shared their thoughts during an EPL meeting at Craven Cottage. Both players expressed eagerness for the Eagles to find their winning form again.

Leicester City midfielder Ndidi emphasized the team’s need to rectify mistakes and secure victories, especially after the disappointing loss in Abidjan. He stated, “We see what happens in Uyo.”

Iwobi, who secured a win for Fulham against Leicester, remains optimistic about translating their club performances to the national team. He stated, “We have a lot to prove… we just want to do that consistently for Nigeria as well.”

Despite the players’ enthusiasm, the Nigeria Football Federation is yet to appoint a permanent coach for the team, raising concerns with the matches drawing closer.

Following Finidi George’s resignation post Nigeria’s disappointing World Cup qualifying matches, names like Swedish manager Janne Andersson and former Ivory Coast coach Harve Renard have been speculated for the coaching role.
