ASUU Issues Warning of Potential Further Disruption to Academic Calendar

In response to unresolved issues, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum. Speaking at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted key concerns including the need for an emergency revitalisation fund for public universities, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and third-party deductions of members.

Osodeke also mentioned other pressing issues such as the cessation of illegal recruitments, the proliferation of public universities, and the removal of universities from the treasury single account and new IPPIS to promote autonomy.

During a National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Ibadan, ASUU conducted a comprehensive review of engagements with both Federal and State Governments regarding key issues affecting Nigerian universities and workers.

Osodeke expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions in universities and the nation as a whole. He criticized the government for failing to address critical issues faced by the union, leading to scholars leaving for countries where their expertise is valued.

ASUU condemned the government’s lack of urgency in resolving outstanding issues and issued a 21-day ultimatum to address these concerns. The union emphasized the importance of national dialogue and unity among the people.
