My Dad Made Me a Manchester United Fan

Oluwatobiloba Olubiyi, popularly known as Agba or Oli Ekun, a Nigerian actor and comedian, shares his passion for sports and Manchester United in a recent conversation with ABIODUN ADEWALE

You have dabbled in sports alongside your entertainment career. How did you establish your presence in this field?

My interest in sports precedes my journey into entertainment. Since childhood, I have been vocal about sports, and this passion naturally carried over into my career. It resonated with brands who recognized that apart from my comedic persona, I am deeply involved in sports. For example, when I hosted an event for Brilla FM recently, the organizers noted my bio where I proudly declared my allegiance to Manchester United. This connection played a key role in shaping my relationship with sports.

Were you actively involved in sports during your upbringing?

I was actively engaged in sprinting and was a key member of my primary school’s relay team. I eagerly anticipated Fridays and Saturdays for football matches and swimming sessions. Growing up, the schools I attended placed a strong emphasis on sports, which laid a solid foundation for my sporting interests. Additionally, influenced by my father, a passionate Manchester United supporter, I began supporting the club around 2005. Despite my fondness for Real Madrid at the time, I followed my dad’s footsteps in backing the Red Devils, despite their current struggles.

Did you achieve any sporting accolades during your school days?

While I may not have won individual medals, the relay races were more about fun than competition. In our team, everyone was a winner, and that camaraderie was our greatest reward.

Who were the Nigerian sports icons who inspired you?

Athletes like Blessing Okaghare, the policewoman Chioma Ajunwa, Deji Aliu, Olusoji Fasuba, and Uchenna Emedolu served as sources of inspiration during my formative years.

Nigeria’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where no medals were secured, evoked what emotions in you?

The lack of medals was disappointing and somewhat unbelievable. Previously, our athletes garnered significant attention for their achievements. However, I sense a decline, possibly due to systemic issues. I recall a talented sprinter from my school who joined the national team but faded into obscurity due to the inadequate support system. This scenario underscores the need for better sports infrastructure to harness our talents effectively.

As a Manchester United enthusiast, do you believe you hold the bragging rights in the derby, and why?

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure, Manchester United’s dominance has waned, with sporadic victories such as in the FA Cup final offering brief respite. However, inconsistencies in performances, as seen in matches like the Community Shield, have led to frustrations among fans. Some players lack the passion and commitment emblematic of the club’s legacy, tarnishing its prestige. While the players share blame, the managerial leadership also plays a pivotal role in the team’s current challenges.

Did claiming the FA Cup title provide solace amid last season’s struggles?

Securing the FA Cup was a welcome achievement amidst a challenging season, although it pales in comparison to winning the Premier League or the Champions League, trophies that have eluded the club for years. Winning the FA Cup was a step in the right direction, but greater triumphs are eagerly anticipated.

Andre Onana’s vow to take more risks this season – how do you brace for the potential impact?

I remain indifferent to Onana’s statements given his inconsistent performances in recent seasons. His unpredictability has been a source of frustration for fans, and I maintain a cautious outlook on his contributions to the team.

What are your expectations for the upcoming season?

I hope to see improved performances from the team under the current management. It is crucial for the players to display renewed vigor and determination to achieve better results this season.

The NPFL is set to resume alongside the EPL. How familiar are you with the Nigerian top-flight league?

I made an effort to follow the NPFL during the previous season, although I couldn’t catch many matches. I have a keen interest in watching Shooting Stars play and look forward to attending NPFL games in person this season. Additionally, being from Abeokuta, I extend my support to Remo Stars.
