Emerging boxing star from Nigeria, Taiwo ‘Esepo’ Agbaje, is setting his sights on becoming a world champion after securing the World Boxing Federation featherweight title in 2022, according to PETER AKINBO’s report.

With an unbeaten record of 16 wins and 11 knockouts, Agbaje is resolute in his ambition to leave a lasting legacy in the sport of boxing.

Expressing his determination, Agbaje, also known as ‘Esepo’ meaning plenty punches, stated to NewsNow, “Being a world champion is my ultimate life goal.”

He added, “I view every opponent as a stepping stone towards realizing my ultimate dream.”

The 32-year-old boxer’s journey to the pinnacle of professional boxing had humble beginnings, starting with his family’s influence within their home.

Agbaje shared, “My boxing journey began with the guidance of my parents and siblings. We trained together, and my inspiration mainly stemmed from watching Mike Tyson’s fights.”

He continued, “My family, especially my uncle, has been my unwavering support system, always believing in me.”

Agbaje’s foray into amateur boxing was marked by a series of notable victories. His triumph in clinching and defending the Governor’s Belt in 2010 and 2011 respectively played a pivotal role in shaping his career.

Reflecting on these experiences, Agbaje remarked, “Each win has been instrumental in molding me and providing the determination to progress. Winning and defending the Governor’s Belt were significant milestones.”

The boxer gained valuable international exposure early on, participating in the Youth Olympic Games in Mozambique and the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010, experiences that broadened his perspective on boxing and solidified his career aspirations.

Recalling those events, Agbaje emphasized, “Competing internationally fueled my ambition, propelling me towards greater career objectives.”

Agbaje’s success in amateur competitions extended to claiming victory at the National Sports Festival boxing events in Port Harcourt (2011) and Lagos (2012), showcasing his prowess by also securing gold in kickboxing at the 2015 National Sports Festival.

He mentioned, “I approach every fight and tournament with utmost seriousness, treating each as a make-or-break moment. This mindset has served me well across various disciplines.”

Transitioning to professional boxing, Agbaje sustained his winning streak by triumphing in the GOtv Boxing Championship in the 57 kg category in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, an international win in a friendly bout in the UK in 2013 further boosted his confidence and career trajectory.

Recalling the UK bout, Agbaje remarked, “That fight was truly inspiring, elevating my confidence levels and providing invaluable exposure. These experiences prepared me for the challenges of professional boxing, reinforcing my belief in competing at the highest level.”

As the reigning WBF featherweight champion, Agbaje attributes his undefeated status to unwavering hard work and self-discipline, emphasizing, “Persistent hard work is my mantra – I never cease to push myself. Self-discipline is the cornerstone of my success.”

Memorable fights for Agbaje include his bouts against Tope Musa, Waidi Usman, and Richard Pumicic, with the latter securing him the WBF Intercontinental Featherweight title. These matches not only bolstered his impressive record but also honed his skills and mental resilience.

Acknowledging his achievements, Agbaje expressed gratitude for being awarded the prestigious Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial trophy four times, acknowledging that these accolades offer further motivation and insights for his boxing career.

Remi Aboderin, President of the West African Boxing Union and Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control, commended Agbaje’s accomplishments and potential, labeling him as one of the standout boxers in the region.

Impressed by Agbaje’s accolades, Aboderin remarked, “He is a sensational talent, clinching titles and championships while inspiring numerous young boxers. We, at the NBBofC, admire his style and determination, hoping for greater international opportunities for him.”

Prepping for his forthcoming bout for the President’s Belt in Abuja on October 26, Agbaje maintains a focused and disciplined approach, asserting, “I am preparing rigorously, as always. Every fight is crucial, and I adhere to strict training discipline.”

Assuring his fans of an exciting performance, Agbaje declared, “Expect a thrilling fight as usual. I will not disappoint.”

Looking ahead, Agbaje envisions fighting in the United States, considering it the epitome of professional boxing. However, he fondly reminisced about England as the country where he has enjoyed competing the most.

When asked about his most cherished boxing memory, Agbaje cited winning the WBF title. In contrast, his most somber moment traces back to his amateur days when he endured a broken wrist, a setback that further fueled his determination.

As Agbaje continues to ascend in the boxing realm, he offers words of encouragement to budding boxers in Nigeria, stressing, “Hard work is key. Always believe in yourselves.”

With his focus set on world championship glory, Agbaje stands as a shining testament to Nigerian boxing talent poised to leave a mark on the global stage.
