An Advisory Committee Encourages Taraba Council Chairmen to Utilize Autonomy Wisely

Urging the chairmen of the 16 councils in Taraba State to align with Governor Agbu Kefas’s vision, the Advisory Committee on Local Government Autonomy emphasized the need for ensuring that the benefits of autonomy are distributed equitably across the state.

During a recent sensitization and interactive session with the local government chairmen, the committee reiterated the potential of the new autonomy in driving development, enhancing service delivery, and ultimately improving the well-being of communities in Taraba.

As a seven-member advisory committee, recently appointed by the state governor, their primary task is to establish a framework for the effective implementation of autonomy within the state.

Peter Abel Diah, the committee’s chairman, highlighted the necessity of active engagement and collaboration with the committee to facilitate a seamless transition, acknowledging that the autonomy comes with a set of increased responsibilities.

Emphasizing the importance of exercising power transparently and accountably, Diah advised the chairmen to work closely with traditional leaders and communities, align resource allocation and decision-making processes with community needs, aspirations, and priorities.

The committee also interacted with the heads of local government administration and finance directors, urging them to demonstrate their capacity to manage resources effectively, implement policies efficiently, and generate tangible outcomes for the welfare of their constituents.

Addressing the officials, Diah highlighted the unique opportunity they now have to transform service delivery and development within their respective domains by actively engaging with communities, understanding their concerns, and collaborating on tailored solutions to address pressing issues.
