MTN Warns About Nigeria’s Telecom Sector Facing Crisis Due to Tariff Hike

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, has raised concerns about the state of the Nigerian telecom sector, likening it to being in an Intensive Care Unit and emphasizing that immediate action is crucial to prevent a collapse.

Speaking at a hybrid telecom investment forum organized by Financial Derivatives Company in Lagos, Toriola highlighted the urgent need to save the sector from potential downfall.

In contrast, Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, Carl Cruz, remains optimistic about the sector’s ability to attract investments despite the challenges it faces.

Cruz justified the necessity of telecom tariff hikes by pointing to the escalating operational costs within the industry.

Notably, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Aminu Maida, recently refuted claims of telecom tariff increases, stating that there have been no new hikes for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) or any additional costs for consumers.

However, Mobile Network Operators in Nigeria persist in advocating for telecom tariff adjustments.
