Solutions Sought by Stakeholders for Challenges Facing Young Nigerians

It has been emphasized by stakeholders the importance of tackling the vulnerabilities that adolescents and young individuals encounter in Nigeria.

This was mentioned in a statement signed on Sunday by Bolanle Oyeledun, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Integrated Health Programmes.

The statement pointed out, “Adolescence is a crucial phase of life marked by significant physical, emotional, and social transformations. In Nigeria, adolescents and young people encounter a range of challenges including high rates of HIV and other infectious diseases, mental health issues, substance abuse, and limited access to reproductive health services.

According to the World Health Organization, adolescence spans from ages 10 to 19 and is the phase between childhood and adulthood. It is a critical period for establishing good health practices.

“Adolescents undergo rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. This impacts how they perceive, think, make choices, and engage with their environment.

“Although considered a healthy phase of life, there are significant instances of mortality, illness, and injury during adolescence. Much of this can be prevented or addressed. During this period, adolescents form behavior patterns – such as those related to diet, physical activity, substance use, and sexual activity – that can safeguard their health and that of others or jeopardize their well-being presently and in the future,” stated the UN agency.

However, the statement revealed that a fourth scientific roundtable on sustainable interventions for adolescent vulnerabilities is planned to be held in Abuja on Thursday to deliberate on enduring strategies required to address the challenges faced by this crucial demographic.

It was stressed that stakeholders will determine sustainable approaches to empower adolescents through education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), vocational training, and leadership initiatives.

“Participants will also explore how technology can improve health interventions and boost mental wellness among young individuals. The aim of the event is to foster collaboration, exchange of knowledge, and the formulation of a comprehensive and sustainable approach to address the needs of adolescents and young people. It is anticipated that the conversations will lead to practical action plans and partnerships to enhance the lives of young Nigerians.

“The roundtable welcomes the involvement of government officials, development partners, civil society organizations, youth representatives, researchers, and other key stakeholders dedicated to the welfare of adolescents and young people,” it added.
