Enhanced Security Measures in Place for Planned One-Million-Man Protest in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has intensified security measures ahead of the planned one-million-man march aimed at concluding the #EndBadGovernance protests. They have reiterated their stance on arresting individuals who choose to protest outside the authorized venues for the demonstration.

Designated locations for the protest include Isaac Bora Park and Pleasure Park, both situated along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Concerns have been raised by the command regarding potential disruptions by certain individuals looking to exploit the final day of the protest to instigate chaos and engage in criminal activities under the guise of protesting against hunger.

In a statement released in Port Harcourt, the state police command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, emphasized the need for vigilance and compliance with the designated protest sites.

The statement issued by the police reads, “The Rivers State Police Command is aware of the scheduled ‘One Million Man Protest’ set to occur across all 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, August 10, 2024.”

“We have received information that certain troublemakers, previously deterred from engaging in looting and other criminal acts during earlier protest days, intend to exploit this final day to cause harm, commit theft, and extort unsuspecting residents.”

“To maintain order and protect citizens, Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Olatunji Disu, has directed all potential protesters to assemble at the designated Abali Park and Pleasure Park areas for the demonstration.”

The police command emphasized the importance of adhering to the authorized protest sites and stated readiness to prevent any disturbances in the state.

All tactical units and divisional authorities have been put on high alert across different locations to deter any actions that may jeopardize public safety.

The Commissioner of Police instructed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Team Commanders to implement stringent patrolling strategies and closely monitor their respective areas to apprehend and prosecute any individual or group partaking in illegal activities or causing disruptions.

The statement praised the professionalism showcased by the Rivers State Police Command in managing protests over the past nine days, safeguarding lives and preventing casualties.

Residents are urged to refrain from actions that could disturb peace and security in the state, as the Command remains dedicated to upholding public order and ensuring the safety of all individuals.
