Recent Arrests Made in Lagos for Alleged Car Theft

In Lagos State, two individuals from the Republic of Benin, Kosoko Rafiu and Nunayo Sunayo, have been detained on suspicion of stealing a vehicle.

On August 6, 2024, the suspects were apprehended while trying to escape with the stolen vehicle along the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway.

PUNCH Metro reports that the suspects, following the vehicle theft, made an attempt to avoid a police checkpoint by speeding.

Their effort was in vain as they were eventually captured in the Abule Ado area of the state.

Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the suspects had stolen the vehicle from an event in the Anthony Village locality.

Hundeyin mentioned, “These suspects, who specialize in stealing vehicles from events, believed the ongoing protests would facilitate their escape from Nigeria.”

He elaborated on the events that led to their arrest.

“Their luck ran out after they stole the vehicle around midnight.

“During a special duty amid the ongoing protests, the Divisional Police Officer of Trade Fair received information about a red Toyota Corona heading their way.

“The vehicle was suspiciously speeding, prompting the DPO to signal his team for a stop and search operation,” he narrated.

Following this, the suspects attempted to flee once more upon reaching the checkpoint.

Hundeyin explained, “They were pursued and eventually intercepted at Abule Ado, where they were promptly arrested with the stolen vehicle and taken to the police station for further inquiries.”

In the course of the investigation, the suspects admitted to traveling from the Republic of Benin specifically to engage in vehicle theft in Nigeria.

The police spokesperson also mentioned that the Toyota Corona, with registration number JJJ 741 EJ, was recovered from the suspects alongside various charms. He added that the investigation is ongoing.
