Tragic Incident in Kogi as Six Individuals Perish Following Cassava Flour Consumption, Government Launches Investigation

The Kogi State Government has initiated a probe into the unfortunate events that led to the demise of six individuals who consumed cassava flour suspected to be contaminated.

Reports indicate that the incident took place last Wednesday within a household in Anyoke, Okunchi Ward, Adavi Local Government Area of the state.

Following the consumption of the flour, eight victims were promptly taken to three different medical facilities, where regrettably, six of them succumbed to multiple organ failure.

The two remaining victims have been discharged following treatment.

State Commissioner for Health, AbdulAzzez Adeiza, who had a meeting with the survivors pre-discharge, disclosed that a joint team comprising state and World Health Organisation officials, along with the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer and local health authorities, has been dispatched to investigate the outbreak.

According to him, “Samples of the cassava flour have been gathered for toxicological assessment in partnership with the state Ministry of Agriculture.

“Medical expenses for the victims are being covered by the Kogi State Government, and the final toxicology report will be shared with the public.

“The government acknowledges and appreciates the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals in saving the lives of the two survivors.

“A comprehensive inquiry will be undertaken, involving interactions with community leaders and residents, evaluation of environmental hygiene standards, and scrutiny of the water source.

“Fortunately, no additional incidents of diarrhea or vomiting have been recorded within the household or community.”

The Kogi State Ministry of Health also expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation, advising all to prioritize healthy lifestyles, maintain vigilance, and promptly report any suspicious occurrences.
