Big news for the 2024 NWFL championship: Host announcement and kick-off date!

It was officially declared on Tuesday by the Nigeria Women Football League that Cross Rivers will be the host of the upcoming 2023/2024 NWFL Championship. This announcement was made by Modupe Shabi, the Chief Operating Officer of the NWFL, in Abuja.

The championship, which is the second division of the league, is scheduled to take place in Calabar, Cross Rivers, from August 31 to September 8, 2024. This follows the success of the 2024 NWFL season calendar, including the Premiership Super Six finals in Bayelsa where Edo Queens clinched victory in June.

Upon the arrival of the clubs in Cross Rivers on Thursday, August 29, the draws and pre-match meetings will be conducted. Participating clubs will be grouped into A, B, C, and D, with eight matches set for each venue on Matchday One (Aug. 31) and another eight games on Matchday Two (Sept. 1).

After a rest day on September 2, Matchday Three will be held on September 3, followed by Matchday Four on September 4. Another rest day is scheduled for September 5, with the action set to resume on September 6 for Matchday Five, followed by a third rest day on September 7.

The final Matchday Six on September 8 will feature four simultaneous matches at two venues to determine promotion and relegation. More than 17 registered clubs will vie for the Championship title in Cross Rivers State this year.

Shabi highlighted that the top two teams will earn promotion to the NWFL Premiership, while two teams will face relegation to the women’s league third division in Nigeria.
