Concerns raised by UN as anti-government demonstrations escalate in Bangladesh

Amid the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the United Nations has made a plea for peace in Bangladesh in light of the ongoing violent anti-government protests.

Despite Hasina stepping down and leaving the country on Monday, the situation remains tense with widespread anti-government demonstrations causing havoc.

The protests have taken a violent turn, resulting in numerous fatalities over the past few weeks.

On Monday, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq stated that Secretary-General António Guterres is closely monitoring the developments in Bangladesh.

Guterres urges all parties involved to exercise calm and restraint while stressing the significance of achieving a peaceful, orderly, and democratic transition.

Expressing unwavering support for the people of Bangladesh, the UN chief called for the utmost respect for their fundamental human rights.

Haq reiterated the necessity for a thorough, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all instances of violence that have occurred.

According to reports from NAN, over 300 individuals, including children, have lost their lives since student-led protests erupted in July, with more than 20,000 others sustaining injuries.

The current wave of bloodshed marks one of the most tragic incidents witnessed in Bangladesh.
