Rivers State Police Issues Warning to Violent Protesters

The Rivers State Police Command has made it clear that the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceProtest is escalating in its severity. They have emphasized that unacceptable behaviors such as extortion, vandalism of vehicles, and intimidation of business owners will not be tolerated any longer.

Expressing concern over the absence of effective leadership within the protest groups, the police have stated that this may lead to a breakdown of law and order. They have firmly declared their intention to apprehend and prosecute anyone violating the rights of others.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the Command, released a statement titled ‘Protest Taking Another Shape’ in Port Harcourt on Tuesday morning, addressing these issues and notifying the press.

The police have been actively monitoring the situation and providing security during the protests in the state. However, they are troubled by a recent call from a group of traders and motorists either to remain at home or to participate in the protest.

In the statement, it was indicated, “On August 5th, 2024, the command noted a concerning shift in the nature of the protests in Rivers State.

“Initially, protesters were advised to carry out their demonstrations peacefully within specified areas, with the police ensuring adequate security and identifying any criminal participants.

“Unfortunately, a lack of clear leadership or organization among the protestors has resulted in disorder.

“The protestors have now resorted to illegal activities, including setting fires, extorting drivers, blocking roads, damaging vehicles, intimidating business owners, and robbing innocent citizens.”

The statement also mentioned a group’s threat to alter the protest’s course on August 7th, 2024, urging traders and motorists to either stay home or join the protest.

Moreover, the statement conveyed, “The Rivers State Police Command upholds citizens’ constitutional rights to protest and voice their opinions.

“However, there are clear signs that the organizers are losing control over the protestors, who are turning to more violence and criminal behavior.

“Therefore, the police are prepared to take firm action by arresting and prosecuting any person attempting to violate others’ rights or engaging in criminal acts under the guise of the protest.

“Should the protest deviate from being peaceful, law enforcement will act promptly and decisively.

“Protesters are advised to remain within the specified protest zones – Pleasure Park and Abali Park. They should avoid disrupting citizens’ movement or participating in any illegal conduct.”

The command reiterated its dedication to upholding law and order and safeguarding all residents during this period.
