Impending Protest Threatens the Streets of Lagos

#EndBadGovernanceInNIgeria demonstrators in Lagos are adamant about taking to the streets starting Monday to initiate a new phase of their protest if their demands are not met by the authorities.

Speaking to the crowd at Gani Fawehinmi Park on Saturday, Mr. Hassan Soweto, one of the protest coordinators and a member of the Youth Rights Campaign, made this declaration.

Prior to the nationwide demonstration, a court order had confined all protests in the state to the park, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Defiance of the court order would be inevitable if the protesters follow through with their threat.

Soweto emphasized that unless their demands were met by Sunday night, the protesters would vacate the park in Ojota and commence marching through the streets.

Being confined to the park, the activist stated they would redirect their march to Alausa, the administrative center of the Lagos government, should there be no response from the government.

There will be no protest at the park on Sunday, as Soweto urged residents to attend their places of worship and pray for peace in the land.

Appealing to the police, Soweto called for vigilance against suspected troublemakers attempting to disrupt the peace at the park.

The observation by NAN revealed that the police sectioned off the service lane on Ikorodu Road for the protesters, dedicating the BRT lane and two other lanes for motorists.

It was also noted that on Saturday, there was increased vehicular activity compared to Thursday and Friday’s low traffic volume.

Commercial operations have picked up in Ojota and surrounding areas, with more stores opening for business, as observed by NAN.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, remains on-site, leading other security personnel to ensure the safety of the protesters for the third consecutive day.

According to SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s spokesperson, there were no arrests made among the protesters on Friday, as reported by NAN.
