Oyo State Governor Assists in Funding Burial of Nigerian Flag Designer

The family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who designed Nigeria’s flag, announced on Friday that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has provided funds for their patriarch’s burial.

NewsNow reveals that Akinkunmi’s flag design was chosen as the best in 1958 out of all submissions during a competition to create a new national flag for Nigeria.

Originally from Abeokuta in Ogun State, Akinkunmi resided in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, until his passing on August 29, 2023.

In a statement from the family’s spokesperson, Samuel Akinkunmi in Ibadan, it was stated, “We want to inform the public that Governor Makinde has released funds for the burial of our patriarch.

“He passed away last year in August and we are yet to lay him to rest. The delay is due to certain reasons. A government representative from the Federal Government, led by the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, assured us of government support for the burial. Additionally, the state government committed to assisting with the funeral expenses.

“When we set dates for the burial, we reached out to them but did not receive the expected support. Eventually, we considered proceeding with the burial independently, but were advised against it at the time. Fortunately, Governor Makinde has now honored his commitment.

“We express our gratitude to him, the members of the 7th Assembly, the state Advisory Council, and all those who advocated for this cause. Our appreciation also extends to the Yoruba World Congress UK for their solidarity. They penned an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, urging the Nigerian and state governments to address the neglect.

“However, as of this communication, the Presidency is yet to fulfill its promise,” reiterated Akinkunmi.
