Protesters in Katsina Cause Chaos, Looting, and Arson

Near the former President Muhammadu Buhari’s residence in Daura, Katsina State, protesters participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement set up bonfires.

The peaceful protest was marred by the intrusion of numerous troublemakers who engaged in looting and destruction in various parts of the state.

Reports indicate that there were injuries and property damage during the chaos.

In the state capital of Katsina, demonstrators carrying placards with different messages made their way to the Government House to voice their concerns.

However, prior to reaching the Government House, some troublemakers seized the opportunity, looting shops and causing damage to property.

Violence erupted in the Katsina metropolitan area as police used tear gas against protesters involved in looting and setting fire to vehicles owned by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.

Tensions escalated as demonstrators gathered near the Modoji Road roundabout, close to the Government House in Katsina, attempting to enter the premises to meet with the Acting Governor.

Security forces intervened to prevent the protesters from interrupting an emergency meeting between the Acting Governor, civil society representatives, and members of the media.

Residents protesting near the former President’s residence in Daura lit fires to draw attention to their grievances.

Chanting in Hausa, the protesters voiced their concerns about hunger and dissatisfaction.

Attempts to reach out to the Katsina State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

According to PUNCH Online, commercial activities in and around Katsina State were brought to a standstill due to the protest.

Banks, markets, filling stations, motor parks, and offices were closed, with major roads and streets empty compared to the usual bustling traffic.

Umar Jibrin, a leader of the protesters, explained to journalists earlier that their protest aimed to urge the government to address issues such as hunger, insecurity, and the restoration of fuel subsidies.

He emphasized the urgent need for the government to take action against the hunger and insecurity affecting many Nigerians, particularly in the Northern region.

“There are numerous individuals facing starvation and insecurity. We are holding this protest to compel the government to confront these challenges.

“We call upon the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to reinstate fuel subsidies and tackle the devaluation of the naira,” he stated.
