Police Deny Nyanya Police Division Burnt during Hunger Protest

In response to social media rumors, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed claims that protesters set fire to the Nyanya Divisional headquarters.

Authorities clarified that only a container used at a checkpoint in the area was damaged.

An official statement from the FCT Police Command addressed the situation.

“Contrary to reports alleging the burning of Nyanya division by violent demonstrators, the FCT police command confirms that the police division remains unscathed. Instead, it was a police container at the Nyanya checkpoint that was ignited,” a spokesperson explained.

Furthermore, the statement disclosed the prevention of an attempt to vandalize the Tipper Garage Police Post, resulting in the arrest of four individuals: Mathias Jude, 29, from Nyanya Area D; Mohammad Ahmed, 23; Abba Jibril, 18; and Mohammad Haruna, 18.

CP Benneth Igweh, the FCT Commissioner of Police, acknowledged citizens’ right to protest but strongly condemned any violent or destructive actions towards public facilities.

“Any individual involved in violent protests and engaged in damaging public property will be held accountable under the law,” emphasized Igweh.
