Police Container Set Ablaze by Suspected Hoodlums at Checkpoint in Abuja, Four Arrested

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command reported on Thursday that a police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint was burnt by hoodlums.

Additionally, there was an incident where individuals attempted to vandalize the Tipper garage Police post in the Nyanya area of FCT.

This information contradicts viral reports suggesting that the Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters had been destroyed by hoodlums.

In a statement by the police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, it was revealed that four suspects were apprehended for trying to damage the Tipper garage Police post.

Adeh clarified, ”Despite rumors of the Nyanya division being burned down by violent protesters, the FCT police command confirms that it was the police container compartment at the Nyanya checkpoint that was set on fire, along with the attempted vandalism at the Tipper garage Police post by the group of four suspects. They have been identified as Mathias Jude, 29, Mohammad Ahmed, 23, Abba Jibril, 18, and Mohammad Haruna, 18, who are now in custody.”

Adeh mentioned that the FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, expressed disapproval at the destruction of public and police property during the protests.

She warned that those found guilty would face legal consequences.

Adeh stated, “While acknowledging the residents’ right to protest, Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh condemns the act of destroying public or police infrastructure. Any violent protester caught damaging public property will be subject to legal repercussions.”
