Protests in Kano and Jigawa turn violent, leaving many injured

What started as peaceful demonstrations in Kano and Jigawa escalated into chaos as security forces resorted to using bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesters. The protests, part of a nationwide movement demanding government reforms due to the recent hardships faced by citizens, witnessed a significant turnout of discontented Nigerians.

Concerned about potential violence, commuters stayed indoors while shops and businesses remained closed. Despite this, protesters took to the streets chanting solidarity songs and calling for the end of bad governance, with their placards bearing messages like “bring back subsidy.”

In Jigawa State, the protest began at the Eid ground, then marched through pass and Government House road. Tensions rose as protesters set tyres ablaze along the government house road, prompting the police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Meanwhile, in Kano, the protests gained widespread support throughout the metropolis and local government areas. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in Kano, and many others sustained injuries as security operatives fired live rounds and tear gas at the protesters.

A visit to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital revealed that numerous protesters had been rushed there for urgent medical care, with injuries ranging from wounds to bullet-related trauma. Medical staff are working tirelessly to save the lives of those affected.
