Appeal from Ex-Lawmaker, Peller to Protesters: Avoid Violence and Destruction

In a recent press release, Shina Abiola Peller, a former member of the House of Representatives, urged Nigerian protesters fighting against hunger and deprivation not to resort to violence or property damage during their demonstrations.

Representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola federal constituency in Oyo state from 2019 to 2023, Peller emphasized the importance of peaceful rallies and maintaining the integrity of their cause.

He highlighted the significance of protests as expressions of societal values, providing a platform for marginalized voices, and calling for accountability. Peller emphasized the power of protests to shed light on injustices and compel those in positions of power to listen, especially in a democratic system.

Peller recommended that the government address citizens’ grievances proactively to prevent escalations into protests. He also advised security personnel to demonstrate professionalism and restraint when dealing with protesters.

Referring to the prevalent hunger and frustration in communities, Peller stressed the urgent need for tangible change. He underscored the role of peaceful protests in articulating grievances, demanding accountability, reforming systems, and ensuring leadership remains responsive to the populace.

He called for dialogue between protesters and the government to maintain peaceful trajectories of protests and address underlying issues causing discontent. Peller urged security agencies to respect citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech, emphasizing their duty to protect and serve the public without suppressing or intimidating them.

By refraining from excessive force and allowing peaceful protests to proceed without interference, security agencies can help prevent tensions from escalating and ensure a safe environment for all participants.
