Kelechi Iheanacho Joins Sevilla

The news is official: Kelechi Iheanacho has made the switch to Sevilla on a free transfer, inking a two-year deal, as per a report from PUNCH Sports Extra.

The 27-year-old underwent his medical at the La Liga team on Tuesday, completing the process on Wednesday, and then officially became the club’s fifth summer acquisition following fellow Nigerian Chidera Ejuke, Peque, Saúl, and Lokonga.

Having previously played for Leicester City, the striker joined Sevilla for two seasons, with an option for a third, following the end of his spell with the Foxes.

Back in 2017, Iheanacho joined Leicester City, somewhere he had previously been on loan at in their youth system after making the move to Europe. During his time at the then reigning Premier League champions in the 15-16 season, he featured in a total of 232 games across all competitions, tallying 61 goals and 34 assists in his last campaign that extended until the 23-24 season.

The new addition to Sevilla’s squad has also participated in 19 European matches: seven in the Champions League, 11 in the UEFA Europa League, and one in the Conference League.

Regarding his senior team performances, he has so far played 55 matches and netted 19 goals.

One of Iheanacho’s notable achievements was winning the U-17 World Cup in Chile back in 2015, aiding Nigeria in securing their fifth championship while claiming the golden ball as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Despite Sevilla seeming like they might still need reinforcement in their forward department, Iheanacho’s arrival is set to fill the void left by En-Nesyri. Among the club’s recent signings, like Peque, who primarily played as an attacking midfielder in Santander, the new coach sees him as a forward, taking Rafa Mir’s position. This addition is expected to complete the attacking line-up even before August commences.
