Call for Academic Researchers to Address Local Issues – TETFund

Encouraging academics to prioritize research that tackles local challenges, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, emphasized the importance of investing in research for the nation’s future.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2024 Research and Innovation Fair of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Echono highlighted the theme: ‘The Rise of Research in Driving Sustainable Development.’

Represented by former OAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Michael Faborode, the TETFund leader urged academics to focus on creating innovative products and policies with real-world impacts.

Echono stressed, “Research alone is insufficient. It is through turning research into tangible innovations and products that we can truly make a difference in our society.”

Calling for increased government investment in research and utilization of youth potential, he added, “Research is vital for national progress, beyond short-term solutions. We must channel our efforts towards addressing local challenges while meeting global standards of excellence.”

Highlighting the significance of research funding, Echono urged the government to recognize the value of research and incentivize its advancement in the country. He cautioned against over-reliance on foreign innovations, stressing the need for self-sufficiency in research and development.

Echoing this sentiment, Osun State Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, pledged the state government’s commitment to leveraging research to enhance food security locally.
