Shina Peller advises security agents to avoid excessive force

Encouraging security agencies to refrain from using unnecessary force on citizens during the upcoming protests, former House of Representatives member Shina Peller stressed the importance of respecting the rights of individuals across the nation.

Scheduled from August 1 to 10, the protests are a response to the prevailing economic challenges faced by the populace.

Issuing a statement on Wednesday, Peller, who represented Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, and Kajola Federal Constituency in Oyo State during the 9th Assembly, emphasized that security personnel on duty must uphold citizens’ rights to engage in peaceful demonstrations.

He warned against the use of excessive force during protests, highlighting the potential for escalation and violence to occur.

Peller’s message to the security agencies emphasized the need for restraint and respect towards citizens’ rights to assemble peacefully and express themselves freely. He reminded them that their duty is to protect and serve, not to suppress or intimidate.

He stated, “Avoiding the use of excessive force is crucial in preventing tensions from rising and violence from erupting unnecessarily. Allowing peaceful protests to take place without interference can help avert chaos and ensure a secure environment for everyone involved.”

Peller also urged participants in the planned nationwide protests to uphold non-violence principles and preserve the integrity of their cause.

According to him, “Protests play a vital role in democracy by providing a platform for the collective voice of the people to be heard. I strongly believe in the power of peaceful protests to voice our grievances and demand accountability from the government. They have the potential to bring about concrete reforms, expose injustices, and hold leaders accountable to the public.

“While recognizing the essential role of protests in enhancing our democracy, I advocate for constructive dissent without destructive tendencies. Therefore, it is crucial for protesters to adhere to non-violence principles and uphold the integrity of their cause.”

Peller emphasized the importance of learning from past events such as the EndSARS protests.

Reflecting on the lessons from the #EndSARS protests four years ago, he highlighted the strengths and pitfalls of mass demonstrations. What began as a symbol of unity and determination later turned into a situation tainted by individuals stirring chaos and discord. It is imperative to avoid repeating past errors.”

He called on the government to address the underlying causes of the protests as many Nigerians are facing hunger and frustration.

Peller expressed, “The evident hunger and frustration prevalent in our communities cannot be overlooked. As the saying goes, a hungry man is an angry man. In my engagements with the people, particularly at the grassroots level, their distress is evident. This deep-rooted discontent underscores the urgency for concrete change.

“It is high time to tackle the root issues behind this discontent. To bring about real change, we must acknowledge and respond to the challenges and aspirations of our people.“
