Abia State Government Postpones Implementation of Restriction on Tricycles and Motorcycles

Plans by the Abia State Government to impose restrictions on the operations of tricycles (Keke) and motorcycles (Okada) between 7 pm and 6 am starting from August 1, 2024, have been delayed once again.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, issued a statement announcing the postponement of the restrictions. The decision was made to allow for the implementation of an alternative solution before enforcing the restrictions.

Explaining the government’s decision, the commissioner emphasized the administration’s commitment to implementing policies with a human touch. He highlighted that the welfare of the people is always a top priority in the government’s actions.

While the registration of commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles in Abia State continues as planned, the government will announce a new date for the commencement of the restriction policy in the near future.

Tricycle riders and motorcycle operators have welcomed the announcement, praising the state government for its thoughtful security measure. They noted that the initial enforcement date coincided with a national protest set for August 1, prompting the government to postpone the restrictions.

Initially scheduled for July 1, 2024, the enforcement of restrictions was rescheduled to August 1 before being put on hold.
