Lagos Police to Ensure Compliance with Court Regulations on Protest Scheduling and Locations

Residents of Lagos can expect the Lagos State Police Command to uphold peace and order as nationwide protests are poised to commence on Thursday, August 1.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, shared in a statement on Wednesday that respecting the fundamental human rights of all individuals, such as the right to freedom of movement and dignity, is a priority for the police.

The statement mentioned, “The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni, has affirmed to Lagosians that the Command has taken necessary steps to ensure the safety of lives and properties, smooth traffic flow, and a calm atmosphere for everyone to carry out their legal activities.

“This assurance is crucial in light of the circulating information about the upcoming nationwide protests starting on Thursday, August 1, 2024, which could potentially disrupt business activities and impede traffic flow.”

The command also stressed its responsibility in enforcing a court directive that confines protests to specific locations.

It additionally stated, “Furthermore, the command has been mandated by a court order to limit peaceful public protests, gatherings, parades, and meetings to Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park on Ikorodu Road, Ojota, Lagos, and Peace Park in Ketu, Lagos, between 8 am and 6 pm from 1st to 10th August 2024.

“The Nigeria Police Force, being an agency of law enforcement, will duly implement this directive.

“Therefore, the command assures all intending protestors that adequate security measures will be in place at the specified locations.”

The police urged protestors to cooperate with the security protocols to maintain peace and order and prevent any potential disruptions or misuse of the protests.

Residents were encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. CP Fayoade reiterated, reassuring peaceful Lagosians to conduct their lawful affairs without fear of being disturbed or threatened.

According to PUNCH online, a Lagos State High Court recently restricted the scheduled nationwide protest to the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and the Peace Park in Ketu.
