NANS Affirms Stance on Protecting Academic Calendars

In a recent statement, the National Association of Nigerian Students, known as NANS, emphasized that Nigerian students are steadfast in safeguarding the academic calendars of educational institutions and are not willing to compromise them for planned protests.

During a town hall meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, NANS national president, Lucky Emonefe, reiterated this stance. The gathering was organized for youths, students, and civil society members to engage in discussions ahead of the scheduled protest on August 1.

The meeting, a collaborative effort between NANS and Mr. Osahon Okunbo, the chairman of Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments, aimed to promote dialogue and understanding among the participants.

Emonefe urged students and youths across the nation to uphold the law and resist any calls for protest, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing their academic pursuits.

He stated, “Our primary focus is on advancing our studies without disruptions to the current academic calendar. Engaging in demonstrations is not our preferred approach, as it can lead to unrest, destruction of property, and potential hijacking of the protest.”

Despite acknowledging the challenges posed by difficult economic conditions and harsh policies, Emonefe stressed the need for constructive engagement with the government through dialogue to address the concerns.

He commended the town hall meeting’s convener for providing a platform for youths to voice their grievances and engage in meaningful discussions.

In a similar vein, Sunday Ashefon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Students’ Matters, urged youths and students to refrain from participating in the planned protest on August 1. He highlighted the significance of unity and cooperation in supporting the government’s efforts to alleviate hardships in the country.
